About Vestal Goodman

Vestal Goodman (December 13, 1929 – December 27, 2003), affectionately known as the “Queen of Southern Gospel Music,” was one of the most influential and beloved gospel singers of her generation. Born Vestal Freeman in Fyffe, Alabama, she began singing in church as a young child and dedicated her life to sharing the message of Jesus Christ through music and ministry. In 1949, she married Howard “Happy” Goodman and became a leading member of the legendary Happy Goodman Family, alongside Howard and his brothers Sam and Rusty. Renowned for her powerful, soulful voice, passionate delivery, distinctive beehive hairstyle and signature white handkerchief, Vestal helped shape Southern Gospel music over a career spanning more than five decades. She recorded numerous gospel favourites, including God Walks the Dark Hills, What a Lovely Name and I Wouldn’t Take Nothin’ for My Journey Now. Her accomplishments included multiple Grammy and Dove Awards, and she became a familiar and much-loved presence through the Gaither Homecoming series. Inducted into the Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame with the Happy Goodman Family in 1998, and honoured individually after her passing, Vestal left an extraordinary musical and spiritual legacy. She died in 2003, aged 74, but her music, unwavering faith and heartfelt ministry continue to inspire gospel audiences around the world.
