Soulful Rendition of Wintley Phipps: “It Is Well With My Soul”

Watch this soulful rendition of the classic hymn “It Is Well With My Soul” by well acclaimed gospel singer, Wintley Phipps. Wintley Phipps, an internationally known baritone singer, was born in Trinidad, West Indies, and grew up in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. In those formative years he was surrounded by music of the church. Following graduation from Kingsway College, a Seventh-day Adventist high school near Toronto, Ontario, he attended Oakwood College, now University, in the 1970s, where he studied music theory and began writing gospel music. After graduating in 1976 with a degree in theology, he continued his education by attending Andrews University, where he completed an M.Div. in 1979. Oakwood University awarded him its first honorary doctorate in 2010.  Since graduating from AU, Phipps has served simultaneously as a minister, acclaimed singer and writer of religious music, and innovator in programs that offer hope to children and youth. With his distinctive resonant baritone voice, he has witnessed through music in a way that has earned him international recognition. He earned two Emmy nominations in 1988 and 1989 for his writing, has given numberless concerts, and sung at prayer breakfasts and other special occasions for Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama and at the Vatican, Billy Graham Crusades, and Robert Schuller’s Hour of Power telecast.(Credits Wintley Phipps Bio)

This song It Is Well With My Soul has struck my attention today.   This is a song of hope. It gives us the message that amidst trouble, sorrow, or pain, we have our Heavenly Father who is for us.That out of these circumstances, God’s goodness still revealed and we can still see hope, peace, and love. Our lives here on Earth is temporal so let us invest more into something that has eternal value.

Reading the history of this hymn, I read that it was penned by a Chicago Lawyer named Horatio Spafford and composed by Philip Bliss. This hymn was written after several traumatic events in Spafford’s life. The first was the death of his only son in 1871 at the age of four, shortly followed by the great Chicago Fire which ruined him financially (he had been a successful lawyer). Then in 1873, he had planned to travel to Europe with his family on the SS Ville du Havre, but sent the family ahead while he was delayed on business concerning zoning problems following the Great Chicago Fire. While crossing the Atlantic, the ship sank rapidly after a collision with a sailing ship, the Loch Earn, and all four of Spafford’s daughters died. His wife Anna survived and sent him the now famous telegram, “Saved alone.” Shortly afterwards, as Spafford traveled to meet his grieving wife, he was inspired to write these words as his ship passed near where his daughters had died.
