All About Faith Series: Part 2 The Persistent Faith of Hannah

broken and contrite spirit1 Samuel 1:7-20 New King James Version (NKJV)

7 So it was, year by year, when she went up to the house of the Lord, that she provoked her; therefore she wept and did not eat.

8 Then Elkanah her husband said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? Why do you not eat? And why is your heart grieved? Am I not better to you than ten sons?”

9 So Hannah arose after they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat by the doorpost of the tabernacle[a] of the Lord. 10 And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to the Lord and wept in anguish. 11 Then she made a vow and said, “O Lord of hosts, if You will indeed look on the affliction of Your maidservant and remember me, and not forget Your maidservant, but will give Your maidservant a male child, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and no razor shall come upon his head.”

12 And it happened, as she continued praying before the Lord, that Eli watched her mouth. 13 Now Hannah spoke in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli thought she was drunk. 14 So Eli said to her, “How long will you be drunk? Put your wine away from you!”

15 But Hannah answered and said, “No, my lord, I am a woman of sorrowful spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor intoxicating drink, but have poured out my soul before the Lord. 16 “Do not consider your maidservant a wicked woman,[b] for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief I have spoken until now.”

17 Then Eli answered and said, “Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant your petition which you have asked of Him.”

18 And she said, “Let your maidservant find favor in your sight.” So the woman went her way and ate, and her face was no longer sad.

19 Then they rose early in the morning and worshiped before the Lord, and returned and came to their house at Ramah. And Elkanah knew Hannah his wife, and the Lord remembered her. 20 So it came to pass in the process of time that Hannah conceived and bore a son, and called his name Samuel,[c] saying, “Because I have asked for him from the Lord.”

How do we press on to God?  Hannah poured out her soul before God. She petitioned God consistently and persistently and got the attention of God. Out of her brokenness, she cried out to God. A Sacrifice that was pleasing before the eyes of the Lord.

Can we have faith like Hannah? Of course we can. Here’s the clue. In Psalms 51:17 it says : “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.”  The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Psalm 34:18.

The next time we pray, let us P.U.S.H.. (Pray Until Something Happens).

You’re In A Position To Fight

I am sharing this devotional from Pastor Colin Smith  from his sermon “Rest in God’s Triumph” from the series Keeping Yourself in Spiritual Shape originally preached on June 29, 2003.

“Sin shall no longer be your master.”  Romans 6:14

The moment you came to faith in Jesus Christ, God forgave your sins. He freed you from guilt, from condemnation and from hell, “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1). That is the beginning of your salvation, but it is certainly not the end.

You were sin’s prisoner

Sin is still your enemy. Sin is still powerful. Every believer is engaged in a struggle with sin. But when you are a Christian you are no longer under sin’s power, “Sin shall no longer be your master” (Romans 6:14).

Before you came to Christ, sin was your master. You were like a prisoner of war: “A prisoner of the law of sin” (Romans 7:23). Your hands were tied. You were blindfolded. You were defenseless. You were in no position to fight. You were at the mercy of the enemy who had you in his power.

Now you can fight!

But now in Christ, you are no longer sin’s prisoner. God has put you in a position to fight back against sin, and that fight is a real battle. Your battle with sin is no longer one-sided, it has become like a boxing match.

Sin has been beating you up for a long time. But God takes off the blind fold and He frees your hands. God brings you out of the cell, and into a gymnasium where there is a boxing ring.

You climb in through the ropes, and you’re seated in one corner of the ring. In the other corner is the guard who used to beat you in the cell. Just the sight of him brings back feelings of helplessness and the fear of imminent defeat.

When the bell rings he comes out to hit you again, but now you are in an entirely different position. Your hands are free and your eyes are open. There is all the difference in the world. Before he could strike you at will, and there was absolutely nothing you could do about it. Now you can land one on him.

The knockout punch!

Now try and imagine yourself in the ring with him. You have been in a grueling contest for ten rounds. You have landed some good blows, but your opponent just won’t go down. He just keeps coming back!

That’s a great picture of the battle against temptation. The longer the fight goes on, the more you long to see your opponent hit the canvas. One day he will.

When Jesus Christ comes again in glory, your enemy, sin, will be down and out. He will never again rise to do battle with you. Your fight will be over. You will receive the crown of victory.

God is our Savior. He saves us not only from sin’s penalty, but also from its power, and one day he will save us from its presence.

Be Joyful Always!

Be joyful always and pray continually

“Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

“When Jesus said, “You must be born again” (John 3), He didn’t say it to a prostitute-it was Nicodemus, a respected rabbi. Jesus said to this man: “You need your whole life to be recreated from the inside.” The new birth is a sovereign work of the Holy Spirit. It happens when He moves in a person’s life. When you see that, you’ll want to pray.

We’re looking for more than behavior modification, we’re looking for new life from above that makes us the kind of people who are joyful always, pray continually and who give thanks in all circumstances. This only happens through divine power. You have the privilege of knowing the One who holds that power, and He invites you to talk to Him. ”
